fwiw, the tool I'm working on to translate Mapnik config files to GeoServer
SLD + configuration creates datastores and configures featuretypes from
scratch in RESTConfig, using PostGIS and Shapefile backends. I would like
to extract examples for the manual from this code, but for now you can take
a look at
