An update on FME and ArcGIS Desktop reading WFS over zipped HTTP ...
FME Desktop 2011 Build 6508 now successfully reads WFS over zipped HTTP.
Although Safe had done work on using compressed HTTP prior to my testing,
there was a bug, but this has now been fixed. Testing FME Desktop today
gave me the following results for transferring data from the Oklahoma
Conversation Commission -
http://ogi.state.ok.us/geoserver/wfs<http://ogi.state.ok.us/geoserver/wfs?version=1.0.0>
*Results for blm_sections_centroids 35,194 points ..
**FME Build 6508* reading WFS 1.0.0 *38.86 secs, 34.312 secs*
*FME Build 6508* reading WFS 1.1.0 *48.0 secs, 46.56 secs* (version
1.1.0 seems just a little slower than 1.0.0)
*Quantum GIS* reading WFS 1.1.0 (for comparison) *38 secs*
This represents a very substantial improvement in performance. Running the
same workbench file a few minutes ago using the older version FME 2011 Build
6501 took 7 minutes and 30 seconds.
To summarize, the following version products will read WFS over zipped HTTP..
*FME Build 6508* and newer
*ArcGIS Desktop 10.1* and newer (Safe Software provides the WFS reader
to ESRI)
Credit to Dale Lutz (VP) and the developers at Safe Software for
incorporating this functionality into their products.
