Could you run a gdalinfo on the north.tif file? (Do you have any chance to
share it somehow?)
Anyway, please note that the ImageMosaic plugin will automatically generate
a mosaic store on top of a folder containing tiff files.
Therefore, you could also try to:
1) create a folder
2) put the tiffs file in that folder (with its PRJ if needed although the
gdal_translate -a_srs should have set the CRS within the tiff file itself)
3) create a new ImageMosaic coverage store by specifying that folder as URL.

the plugin will automatically build the property file, as well as the shape
file and so on.
