On 64-bit platforms, I strongly recommend the use of the Oracle JVM option:
-XX:+UseCompressedOops

We have found this to be a very useful option for improving the 
stability of GeoServer deployments on 64-bit JVMs. It greatly reduces 
heap use while retaining the performance benefits of 64-bit.
