I am running openlayers from port 7013, (I updated the copy of openlayers
located at GeoServer 2.1.2\webapps\geoserver with the full version of
openlayers and have then used an exisiting link to this openlayers location,
I tested this openlayers with WMS layers and it works ok for them). Ideally
I want to avoid a proxy server, as I have heard that there are security
issues with them.

I have tried to reproduce the error in other ways, and I can get it to
happen with a WMS layer if I give it the wrong file location. Therefore I
think I may be looking in the wrong place for the WFS. Is there a way I can
check that a location contains a WFS layer? (beyond trying to add the layer
of course),
