There is a ticket in jira with a proposed solution to that, but there were disagreements on how the patch should have worked and it never got applied: http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-4702 As far as I remember it conflicted with the work in http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOS-4554. GEOS-4554 is likely to get committed on trunk within one month, so maybe after that there will be enough clarity to resume GEOS-4702, assuming there are still funds to work on it, that is.
