Yes. The stable branch is over a year behind trunk, which has many 
important improvements. Here are some Jira queries that should give you 
a rough idea of things that have been fixed. These are only part of the 
picture as we also have an internal Jira and not all its issues shadow 
codehaus issues:

The Spatial Information Services Stack currently uses trunk:

integration and deployment testing with app-schema. They are all built
