No, I'm not very familiar with this part of the code. But it does seem
like an obvious optimization (for memory usage) to discard label candidates
as early as possible so I wouldn't be surprised to find that not all
labellable features are retained up to the time that labels are rendered,
so I thought it worth a mention. I'm sure Andrea will speak up if I am
leading you astray :)
