The OGC standards provide no direct answer to your question.
I can think of two ways:
* one is to build a WCS request asking for a very small area of the raster,
close to a single pixel,
and then interpret the returned GeoTiff in your software
* the other one applies if you are using WMS, you can do a GetFeatureInfo
request and what you
will get back is the value of the bands in that pixel for the location
specified, in the case of a dted
it will be the elevation. Mind, this is GeoServer specific, it's not a
behavior mandated by the WMS
standard... as far as the latter is concerned if we returned the string
"this is a nice elevation model"
it would be compliant anyways
