no need to:

Add new store ---> Shape file

Give it a name: 
XXXX
Enter or browse for the shape file location:
*file://U:\raetest\TR_FERRY_ROUTE.shp* for example

Save. And never turn the remote computer off.
For that reason rather copy your data to your Geoserver data directory. 
where the shape file location would look something like that:
*file:data/shapefiles/states.shp*

Style, publish and you are done.
