The plugin does not support reading geotiff files. Look here for supported
formats
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/javax/imageio/package-summary.html

Additionally, your sample tile has already overviews (pyramids) in it. You
would have to use http://www.gdal.org/  to transform tiles in a supported
format.

Let me ask a question. GeoServer supports Geotiff and Big Geotiff files.
The standard procedure is to produce one big geotiff file with inner tiling
and overviews (pyramids).  Why not produce such a file and use the
GeoServer geotiff reader.
