Thanks Andrea. For the layer groups, each of the groups I have are
composed of 2 active (single) layers. So no nested layer groups. I'll
switch to 2.4.0 in a few hours, hoping this would work ! I'll keep you
informed of the progress.

That is, it blows up when dealing with layer groups.
Do you have nested layer groups in your configuration?
There was a bug in the 2.3.x series that resulted, I believe, in an
error similar to the one you're experiencing:

I believe Mauro (cc'ed) fixed it by 2.4.0, I don't think there is a
2.3.x release with the fix
