of the <geometry>:
"For non-point geometries, a representative point is used (such as the
centroid of a line or polygon)."
However, you can mangle/convert geometries (though there can be a
performance penalty). The list of geometric functions is here:
http://docs.geoserver.org/stable/en/user/filter/function_reference.html#geometric-functions
There may be a simpler way to do this, but in theory you can use one of
those to move the point to the desired location and then label it.
