GeoServer ships with a minified openlayers that only does what we need, and
it's driven by an internal template that it's not meant to be modified, but
if you're
curious, here is the java code that runs when doing the request with format
equals
to application/openlayers:

and the templates used to generate the preview (which one is going to be
used, depends on the GeoServer version you have):
