there are many projections that are valid in this zone.

I think EPSG:2153 is deprecated, and not even visible in the latest epsq
registry web interface. This page contains the remark "Deprecated: 
Change of base geogCRS name to accord with revised Geomatics Canada
practice. Use EPSG:2955 instead.":

EPSG:2955 has degrees for its GEOGCS/UNIT, not DMS as used in EPSG:2153, so
should not be affected by GEOS-4010. EPSG:2955 may be the projection you
need.

A quick look at the DataBC WMS services (you can see projections in the WMS
Capabilities) suggests that EPSG:3005 (BC Albers) is also popular in BC.
Note that this is not a UTM projection.
