Hi Daniel, reading WKT from a normal database is not all that useful, since normally you cannot spatially index a varchar column :-)
Is this what you're using, geospatial memsql support? http://docs.memsql.com/4.1/concepts/geospatial/ If so, I'd write a memsql datastore that can actually encode the right sql for bbox queries (it looks memsql specific), in order to have support for spatial indexes. Or if you don't know how to do that, check out the commercial support page at geoserver.org to find someone that can do the coding on your behalf.
