In response to Andrea's questions about 2.7.7, several users have
expressed their interest in Java 8 support in 2.9.x. I would like to
clarify a few points:

- Java 8 is a supported platform for running 2.8.x.

- 2.9.x makes Java 8 mandatory because it permits Java 8 constructs in
*source code* as well.

- If you are looking for a GeoServer that is supported on Java 8, 2.8.x
(stable) is the current recommendation. You can upgrade to 2.8.x and
Java 8 now.

- You do not have to wait for a 2.9.x release unless you want to use new
functionality that is implemented using Java 8 source code and has not
been backported to 2.8.x.

- Core GeoServer developers are ironing out a few Java 8 bytecode
problems affecting 2.9.x; these problems do not affect 2.8.x which does
not permit Java 8 source code. These problems will be fixed by an
upgrade to Spring 4 for GeoServer 2.9.0.

Kind regards,
