Hello David,
The NetCDF Store creates a couple of auxiliary files for indexing purposes.
Therefore I think it's a simple permission issue as you say.
By default they will be created beside the original data.
However, you may also consider to configure an external directory with
proper file permissions, to contain the auxiliary files, by adding this
switch to the java process
-DNETCDF_DATA_DIR=/path/to/auxiliary/folder
