This has got me thinking whether I could also use the security properties of Geoserver instead of the web server. For example can I restrict one Geoserver instance to serve data only in JSON (this will only be useful to developers / browsers) and restrict the "Desktop only" Geoserver to serve data only in GML (QGIS, ArcGIS and the like)? It is a bit of a brute force but seems more sustainable.
