Mind, 2.9.x is not supported anymore. Try 2.11, if that one does not do it
anymore, then problem solved (the changes in 2.11 cannot be backported to
2.10, too extensive, sorry).

Just removing the shapefile won't work. You also have to remove the other
mosaic support files, the property one and the sample image.

I was doing some training months ago and we took an ECW, translated to a
Geotiff with JPEG compression, 85% quality, YCBCR color interpretation,
full overviews and the result was... smaller :-)
No visible quality difference. We did not do performance testing, but at
the naked eye performance seemed to be the same.
