I updated the mappings file (data_dir/csw/Record.properties) to map title to
name and that appears to be working for me.

Right.. that means sorting on title won't work for the default mapping indeed
:( You could just replace it by 'name' or if you have a title set up for each
resource, you could just replace it by just 'title'.
It is a pity, and I guess it should at least have been documented :/

Ah, makes sense, the default mapping is:
title.value=if_then_else(isNull(title), name, title)
