So a bit of development in GeoServer (gs-wms module) and a bit in Geotools (gt-render module). Also, it still won't solve the problem of disappearing labels mind, but it should reduce it some. Case where it won't work is if the polygon is large enough to fit the label, but it's 1/4 slices are not, making the label disappear.
