If there is code to handle JSON in a different way, I cannot see it in a 2 minutes search, a debugging session would surely unearth it though. Sorry, cannot help you here much. If you figure it out, please propose a change to the documentation (use the edit button for the page in github) so that others don't have to go through the same process.
