Hi, I've signed up for a key on os.uk <http://os.uk/> and have tried to add the WMTS as a cascading store. Unfortunately I don't get the same errors as you get.
I could look further into the issue if you get me some more info. Those log-messages doesn't tell much. It would be nice if you had copied a few more lines from the log. It would also be great if you could elaborate on which version of Geoserver you are running, and if you have a proxy server configured in your setup.
