I confirm that the version is 2.20.1, as shown in my “Build Information” in
the “About” tab. I think that you are right regarding the layer group
referencing something that either doesn’t exist anymore or is broken. How
can I pinpoint which layer is faulty, given that this problem breaks a
significant part of the GUI?

Cheers,

Clément Drouadaine.

Checking the 2.20.1 source code:

Caused by: java.lang.NullPointerException

     at
org.geoserver.security.SecureCatalogImpl.checkAccess(SecureCatalogImpl.java:681)

     at
org.geoserver.security.SecureCatalogImpl.checkAccess(SecureCatalogImpl.java:555)

     at
org.geoserver.security.SecureCatalogImpl.checkAccess(SecureCatalogImpl.java:688)

     at
org.geoserver.security.SecureCatalogImpl.checkAccess(SecureCatalogImpl.java:535)

Line 681 is a method declaration... so not a place where a
NullPointerException can happen:

https://github.com/geoserver/geoserver/blob/2.20.1/src/main/src/main/java/org/geoserver/security/SecureCatalogImpl.java#L681

Can you double check your GeoServer version?

If I had to take a guess anyways, maybe the layer group is referencing to a
layer that does not exist anymore, or

to a style that does not exist any more.

Cheers

Andrea
