Hi Alessio,
back when the REST API got designed there was little talk about PATCH,
also,
the API is primarily designed for XML usage, while JSON is taking a "ride
along"
(I'm  mentioning this because all PATCH methods I'm aware of are talking
about JSON).

The approach that was taken back then was to use PUT with partial payload
instead,
you PUT the bit of the document you want to change and it will be merged on
top of the existing one.
I believe you don't need to encrypt the password when using it, but haven't
tried.
