An update, I think I have finally addressed the feedback from 2.22-M0.

Sorry for the long email on online resource I eventually figured a workable
approach.

The hardest part was troubleshooting the interaction with the wicket
controls used to select workspace and/or layer (eventually resorting to
brute force check model, input, and rawInput to try and determine what has
changed).

So what is next? I think we could make the 2.22-RC once the PR is merged.
