This looks very good in my opinion.
Although I don't have the background to judge about al facets of the "complex"

response to my moaning about having to work through difficult APIs just to

Oh know - I knew about the problem before :-) I view addressing the
simple case well as part of any good design.
If I understand it correctly, "SimpleXXX" always extends
"XXX" and provides convenience methods, but retains the possibility to still
access all other methods, doesn't it. Makes sense. The JavaDoc improvement for
J2SE 1.6 that Martin mentioned (i.e. showing all operations or hiding "advanced
methods") would neatly fit in with this concept.
