I don't mind neither as long as the interfaces or abstract classes
live in Geotools. If they were going in GeoAPI, I would prefer
interfaces since some developpers outside Geotools have asked very
strongly for implementation freedom. But in the Geotools's API module,
abstract classes are just as fine for me.
