I would be *really* disappointed if geotools started incorporating
JDK 1.5 features as I, along, probably, with many others, am unable
to run JDK1.5 in my J2EE container.

I completely agree, and have always made this very clear.

So we will wait. Anyway, all GeoAPI releases in the 2.x line will be JDK 1.4 compatible (GeoAPI 2.1 targeted for the next OGC meeting). A GeoAPI release targeting JDK 1.5 would be a GeoAPI 3.0 release, and will probably not happen before mid-2006 (maybe later if JDK 1.5 is still a problem in mid-2006).

As Jody point out, part of the story about JDK 1.5 is "type narrowing" (also known as "covariant return type"). This is also the only JDK 1.4 to JDK 1.5 change that may bring some slight compatibility breaks in GeoAPI (on implementor side - probably not on user side), which is why it may be better to not wait too long before introducing them (or at least document a migration path). Other JDK 1.5 features like generic types and annotations are compatible changes, and concequently are less problematic.

        Martin.
