Sorry, ignore my moaning on this matter. I momentarily forgot that the "old" 
Expression interface extends the new one (that is 
org.geotools.filter.Expression extends org.opengis.filter.expression.Expression)

So I actually get a GeoAPI filter back whenever a function claims to return the 
deprecated org.geotools.filter.Expression.

OK, I can live with this. It is confusing, but just that. ;-)
