I sent a lot of email; mostly I tried to hook things up in uDig (a Java 5 environment) and discovered it was impossible. I stripped out the Java 5 generics and had a long hard talk with Andrea and Justin about what a minimal FeatureCollection interface could be (since going on wishful thinking was not doing anyone any good).
