Thanks for the reply Martin, lets see if the info smells for you:

CPU: Intel Core2 Duo 2.0Ghz
OS: openSuse GNU/Linux 10.3 x86_64

$ java -version
java version "1.5.0_13"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_13-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 1.5.0_13-b05, mixed mode)

(java installed by hand, not from a suse rpm)

Jai and jai-imageio installed in jre/lib/ext and jre/lib/amd64 as per .jar 
and .so corresponds.

JAI version: jai-1_1_4-pre-dr-b03-lib-linux-amd64-10_Oct_2007.zip
JAI-IMAGEIO: jai-imageio-1_2-pre-dr-b04-lib-linux-amd64-11_Oct_2007.zip
