Sure; I will need to dig up the details for you tomorrow; right now the code is in uDig trunk and is used for our WMS-C support. A SoC student extended this work to support many other tile formats; and his mentor Jesse Eichar intends to bring it back into the project.
Jesse if we can find a home for this work in GeoTools my preference would be to combine forces with Pieter here.
