I (eventually) guessed that other apps must be doing something of the sort that you describe. I've hacked a work-around into the swing module that takes care of the problem, though not with much elegance ! After I have finished refactoring the swing module (paused at the moment because of other work) I would _love_ to create a branch and try rewriting the filter code from the ground up. I think of filters as akin to a DSL within GeoTools and since I've got basic skills and experience in designing and implementing DSLs, I've been musing about reworking (and documenting !) the filter packages for some time.
