Hi,
I've just committed a new feature that should make
people dealing with road plates happy: stretchable
road plates.

The GeoTools rendering subsystem has had the ability
to put a graphic on the back of a label for quite some time
using TextSymbolizer2, which includes a Graphic in the
definition of the symbolizer.

Adding the graphic in the text symbolizer guarantees the
graphic is painted only if the label is, and in the same
position as the label (given certain params the renderer
will move around the labels trying to find non conflicting
positions).

However up until today the graphic was fixed in side: too
small for some labels, too big for others.

http://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOT-3238
adds two vendor options that enable graphic resizing with
a customizable margin around the label.
The jira also contains a few examples of stretching using
a mark or an SVG symbol (the stretching works for raster
images too, but of course the result does not look as nice).

Enjoy!

Cheers
Andrea
