It also uses plain Java URL connection, but I'll be working on wfs-ng this week making it share the http code with the wms/wps clients. Just commented on https://jira.codehaus.org/browse/GEOT-3574 that he might be hitting the issues at GEOS-3967 / GEOT-2961 and therefore should try a newer version of geotools.
