Simply put, wait for a core developer to have time to look into it.
I'm the one that should apply that patch, but right now my working hours
are fully booked and in the spare time I'm busy setting up build servers
for alternative platforms (Windows, OpenJDK7).

If it's any consolation, I have patches I wrote myself a few months ago
that still haven't landed due to the same issue of lacking time, as well
as community modules that I'd have to try and graduate if I could only
find the time to do so (shapefile-ng and transformation module).
