The problem was a redundant cast that referenced an import removed by 
the fix for GEOT-5595. On master and 16.x the redundant cast was removed by:
squid:S1905 - Redundant casts should not be used

For consistency and attribution, I have cherry picked the whole commit 
onto 15.x:
