I did not get to implement it, and now got back as a way to get good support for background in MBStyle. Compared to the thread, Style will contain a single new Background element, which happens to be ... a Fill! It's actually the most natural approach in my opinion, the fill covers all we need, including opacity control, expressions and env variables, backgrounds made of repeated images and so on. Here is a proof of concept PR that I hope to complete in the next few days: https://github.com/geotools/geotools/pull/2775 I believe it slots in quite nicely and simplifies things in MBStyles too. The plan is to complete it, by adding support for the gt-xsd SLD parsers/encoders, and a bit of docs. As a replacement for "giant polygon" I won't be implementing support for interaction with the WMS bgcolor spec, when the background is set, it's solid, as if the source was opaque. Support for eventual interaction and override can be implemented later. Same goes for background support for other styling languages, that will come as the respective module maintainers find time to get it done. Feedback appreciated.
