Hi Peter!
I tried to do what you told me:
I create a new StyledMapPane, add the GridCoverage layers, add a RenderedMapScale and then repaint the panel but it doesn't work. If I don't add the layers, the scale is displayed in the panel. But it's the same way I init my panel when I launch my applet.
Have you got an example? Do you know why does it work at the initialisation and not after?

FWIW:
I've taken a similar approach to Aaron, but with one caveat:
context.removeLayer did not appear to work for me when I wanted to
remove GridCoverage layers (for normal layers it works fine). In that
case of removing GridCoverage layers, the best I could come up with was
to trash the entire context and rebuild.
