To Marcus, Sorry for the late reply. It may be possible to do a direct connect to SDE, but like most things in open source, it will only happen if someone really wants to make it happen.
Direct SDE support would require that someone writes a datastore implementation and, more importantly, figures out how to correctly get the data out of the sde database. I expect someone will add support for a personal geodatabase (ms access) before anyone attempts sde.
