I found StyledMapPane to be good but takes a lot of memory. And its
not supported anymore...
Agreed.
LiteRenderer, seems to be too slow to be useful?
It seems to do well for uDig, and there is a twisted version of it
optimized just for shapefiles. If you are really stuck for speed load
your features into a Memory DataStore (or even just a
FeatureCollectionImpl ) and let fly.
What are the other ways to go about development at the moment, and the
best way with its current state. I want to make a small addition to an
application that will show locations of important objects and events
in time. Because this program isn't that GIS focused, I want it to be
fast.
I would seriously hook up with IanT and his student who are looking into
making a simple version of StyledMapPane based on LiteRenderer.
What this element needs, is to have a geotiff (or jpg/png etc jpg at
the moment) of the area and then important general locations in .shp
file. The main thing on top of that will be the objects and events of
interest to the user.
Interesting, the raster support is bad right now, most of the good stuff
in on a branch waiting to come home. Please check out the Modules page
for the status, advice on a module by module basis. And if the module is
not covered yet, let me know and I can add it ...
Your feed back would be *great* as I just started these pages
specifically to help people in your situtation.
Also it needs to be able to pan and be selected.
I thought StyledMapPane sounded great for this but doesn't seem to
work that well. And with it being dropped what is the go for now?
The lack here is developers, if you have time (or several people have
time) this lack can be address quickly. GeoTools is not trying to be a
widget toolkit or application (a project called geowidgets *is*, but
they dont have the renderer yet). We do understand that if people cannot
see the data the toolkit is not much use to them, but understanding and
time/resources is a different issue.
Sorry I cannot be more help, let's ask IanT.
