yes they are, been used in production settings etc... um Justin the 
module maintainer is off on holiday for two weeks

We have some code for that, think you can find it on the JCS project - I 
cannot pronounce the math but Brent from the
geoserver project knows more.

I did that kind of stuff for DEMs once - pretty cool.  Not aware of a 
free implementation anywhere off the top of my head. But yes if you want 
to play I am sure Justin would be more then happy to accept a patch :-)
