We have code that will load a tiff / or GeoTiff into a GridCoverage (Basically a Planar Image with a bounding box).
Making the viewer is kind of up to you. Ian Turton has an example viewer that a few users are working on in the form of the unsupported/mappane module. I am sure he would love your help.
