The GeoTools project is *open* all our procedures and how to cooperate with us is in the developers guide here: - http://docs.codehaus.org/display/GEOT/Home It covers everything from how to build the source code to how to get commit access and all that kind of stuff. I have started a user guide as well; so if you trip up over any of the code examples fire email to the user list here.
