There is an unsupported tile module which you can look at; I may kill the module because I don't have time / interest in making it real. The solution for me was to remember where in the world the tiles are (using a bounding box and crs) and then pass them through to the renderer as a GridCoverage2D object. I only stored a small cache of tiles in memory; you should find that things like world wind or the wms tile spec allow you to come up with a unique URL for each tile; and then you just can use a LRU queue of tiles (ie separate out the dynamic loading from the moving and zooming).
