The question is what would you like to happen when the size and shape of the window changes? In most cases the AOI of the map must be changed - I just opted for an easy life by reseting to max extent. If you look in the code for JMapPane you'll be able to see where the relevant method is (I expect it's registered to a sizeChanged event or some such) and change/or overide the behaviour that currently occurs.
