As a matter of fact I have.  It has no better performance.  The problem is
not in getting the maps to display.  It's trying to figure out a way to not
have to wait 2 minutes for them to be displayed.  Also I will have more
flexability developing in a straight Swing environment than trying to
develop an Eclipse plug-in.  Then I would not only have to learn GeoTools, I
would also have to learn the Eclipse plug-in/uDig api also.

I am starting out by studying the user's manual.  Since nobody has provided
any hints at resolving this I'll have to do it the hard way.  That's OK. 
I'll know it better by the time I am done.  I just hope I don't just
validate the opinion that this can only be done using C++ or C#.
