What do you want to do with this large image in memory ? I never worded with ArgGrid rasters but I would suggest you download
http://fwtools.maptools.org/ and use gdal_retile.py to build tiles and pyramids. Afterwards you can use the geotools imagemosaic mdoule to process the tiles from the file system or imagemosaic-jdbc to do the same having the tiles in a jdbc database.
